The NWG responds to the reports released over the last few days highlighting the impact and responses to children and young people sexually exploited within the UK, appealing to ensure all professionals who work within this field continue to look at both boys and girls as vulnerable to sexual exploitation.
The NWG support the messages from the Jimmy Savile report, the Barnardo’s “The Tangled Web” report released today and the Howard League report. The need to reduce the impact on boys and girls who suffer the wide forms sexual exploitation has to be improved by all services. To believe the children and increase their confidence to report the abuse, which until recently has been a greater issue for children making disclosures.
Collating the information given by young people and those professionals who work with them as done in Operation Zinc gives a clear indication of sexual exploitation and begins to assist in how to tackle it with that area. It is vital that we become more comfortable with using the trafficking legislation when considering the issue of sexual exploitation in both welfare and prosecution arenas, the NWG continually raises the awareness of the benefits of utilising internal human trafficking legislation wherever possible.
Robust and Rigorous procedures are vital to ensuring the welfare and protection of victims and witnesses and will work towards ensuring that both victims and witnesses do not become criminalised on the symptoms of sexual exploitation.
The need to raise the profile and identification of sexual exploitation and share intelligence will improve responses services offer, will offer greater support for victims and witnesses and improve prosecution procedures.

Chance UK
Region: UK NationalOur mission To improve the lives of primary school children with behavioural difficulties who are at risk of developing anti-social or criminal behaviour in the future. How we achieve it We do this by providing tailored one-to-one mentoring with a carefully screened, trained and supervised volunteer mentor. Our mentors raise children's self esteem via activities such as sports, visiting museums, making scrapbooks...anything the child may be interested in. We work in a solution-focused way, so our mentors and staff focus on the child's strengths and what they do well, rather than their negative behaviour. Many of the children we work with are on the verge of being permanently excluded from school. This is frequently the start point for anti-social and later criminal behaviour in a young person's life, and our early intervention work prevents this progression. We work closely with local schools to improve life for the child, their family and their classmates.

Pace (Parents Against Child Sexual Exploitation)
Region: UK NationalChild sexual exploitation can ruin children’s lives. But it doesn’t just impact on its victims – it affects parents, siblings and the wider family unit too. If you have recently found out that your child is being sexually exploited, or you suspect your child is being sexually exploited, you should contact Pace at www.paceuk.info or call them on 0113 240 3040. They will help you assess the level of risk your child faces and supply you with information on how best to work in partnership with police and social care. Pace recognises parents as valuable resources in tackling child sexual exploitation, and will advise you on how to log information on the perpetrators and gather evidence. Pace also offers emotional support through one-to-one telephone support and a national befriender scheme, as discovering your child’s sexual exploitation can be a very frightening and isolating experience. Pace has worked with over 600 families in England during the last 16 years, so you are not alone. Pace was set up by an affected parent in 1996, under the name of CROP (Coalition for the Removal of Pimping). Since then, Pace has influenced national and local policy and practice to reflect the active safeguarding role of parents, and to highlight the impact of child sexual exploitation on families. It seeks to sustain long term change by training partners in how to work more effectively with parents.
